In season 7, they did the compatibility vote when there was 7 couples left and then did a double eviction to get to 5. In season 5, they waited until they were down to the final 5 and then did the compatibility vote to get rid of just 1 couple. So it really could go either way, doesn't seem like there's a set formula.
